Context

A key element to developing more sustainable cities is increased adoption and usage of public transportation, along with other environmentally friendly options such as walking and biking. A key point of friction for prospective riders is concern for personal comfort, safety, and security on public transit. We believe there is an opportunity to mitigate these concerns using technology and therefore increase transit ridership.

Addressing The Reporting Gap

Research has shown the majority of unwelcome incidents on transit are not reported. For instance, BART found in its SB 434 survey data that 66% of incidents on BART are unreported, and the corresponding figure was 85% for LADOT Transit. This is a significant challenge given the importance of reporting for understanding, sizing, and addressing the issue. LADOT notes: "LADOT Transit’s top priority must be to encourage its riders to report incidents...it has been the most important factor in reducing incidents for those transit agencies that have achieved success with their safety and security efforts."

Mobile Application Overview

The Right To Ride mobile application enables California's transit riders to quickly and conveniently submit feedback relating to their personal comfort, safety, and security across all public transportation services. Users may report negative (but non-emergency) experiences, such as incidents of harassment, verbal abuse, suspicious activity, poor lighting, overcrowding, cleanliness, malfunctioning equipment, etc. Users may also report positive experiences.

User reports are collected and may be shared (on an aggregate basis) with transit operators and government officials to provide community-driven transparency on public transit experiences and help inform future planning and priorities.

Platform Users

  • Riders: Share feedback to inform fellow riders and transit operators. View community feedback to stay informed.

  • Transit Agencies/Operators: Receive actionable data directly from customers to understand perceptions and prioritize fixes.

  • Community Advocates/City Planners/Legislators: Use aggregated insights to inform advocacy and policy-making efforts.
